Tips for Christmas sing-alongs

Playing the piano while others sing along may seem a little intimidating at first, but with some preparation and practice you’ll discover how much fun it can be! Start by choosing a few of your favorite holiday songs and find arrangements for those songs at your level. Plan on taking enough time to learn these songs really well before you try playing them while others sing along. As soon as someone else is singing while you play, your brain will have to work extra hard to process this additional musical input, so you want to make sure you can play the piano part almost without thinking.

As you learn each song, practice singing along yourself. This will make it easier for you to play once others are singing along with you. Another thing you can do is to practice playing along with a recording of the song. This will help you learn to keep a steady tempo. When you can play and sing through a song consistently without making mistakes, you’re ready to accompany your family and friends.

When you accompany singers on the piano, remember that the important thing is to keep the music moving. If you make a mistake, just keep playing. Most of all, relax, have fun, and enjoy yourself! Get more piano accompaniment tips for beginners here.
